Upcoming Event Overview & Objectives

The Sustainable Bangladesh Foundation (SBF), in collaboration with the Center for Culture and Resilience Studies (CCRS), Department of Anthropology, University of Dhaka, is preparing to jointly observe International Minority Rights Day 2026 on 18 December 2026 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Under the theme “Diversity, Dignity and Equal Rights: Building an Inclusive Bangladesh,” the initiative aims to promote the rights, dignity, cultural heritage, and meaningful participation of Bangladesh’s ethnic, indigenous, and linguistic minority communities.

The observance will commemorate the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption, on 18 December 1992, of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities.

Historical Foundations & Constitutional Commitments

Article 23A of the Constitution & International Human Rights FrameworksThe observance will highlight the constitutional commitments of Bangladesh, including Article 23A, which recognizes the protection and development of the unique cultural traditions and characteristics of the country's ethnic communities. Through this initiative, SBF and CCRS connect constitutional principles, international human rights frameworks, academic inquiry, and community aspirations.

National Cohesion & Democratic Inclusion

Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s articulation of Bangladeshi nationalism offered a territorial conception of national belonging, intended to encompass citizens from different ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.

During the first administration of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, meaningful negotiations concerning the Chittagong Hill Tracts and regional refugee repatriation were pursued, contributing to national dialogue on reconciliation, civic participation, and institutional inclusion.

The joint observance aims to foster sustained dialogue on equal rights, cultural preservation, linguistic heritage, and civic participation across all communities.

Advancing UN Sustainable Development Goals

The observance aligns directly with SBF’s broader commitment to inclusive resilience, equal opportunities, and SDG benchmark targets:

SDG 10Reduced Inequalities
SDG 16Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions
SDG 5Gender Equality
SDG 4Quality Education
SDG 13Climate Action
“Diversity is not a challenge to Bangladesh's unity; it is an important part of Bangladesh's identity and strength.”
